Visit of Lucy Van Smit, author of ‘The Hurting’, to St Peter’s College. On Tuesday 15TH October, all fifth-year students spent the morning in the company of the brilliant award-winning author Lucy Van Smit. She spoke to them about her young adult novel ‘The Hurting’ and about her journey as a writer. She had flown in from London for the day to spend time with the students as St Peter’s had been the lucky winner in a Twitter competition that Lucy had posted! ‘The Hurting’ is a compelling, dark and thrilling novel that is flying off the shelves of the school library and the grandeur of its Norwegian setting is proving to be a hit with the fifth years. Lucy kindly signed copies of her novel for the students and she also spent time with our younger writers in the Creative Writing Group, giving them terrific advice on their work. ‘The Hurting’ has been shortlisted for the 2019 Great Reads Award, which is a debut YA book award judged by readers and shortlisted by school librarians. The school library has all 8 novels which have been shortlisted and they can be borrowed for 2-3 weeks from the school library. Students read the novels and can then vote for their favourite. ‘The Hurting’ will undoubtedly get lots of votes given the terrific morning the students spent with its author. Thanks to our library leaders from Transition Year and to Lucy Van Smit for a great day of learning about writing.
